Two-wheeler vs four-wheeler: what maintenance really costs in India
Real service intervals, typical bills and cost per km for a scooter, a commuter motorcycle and a hatchback, with the wear items that catch owners out.
A commuter scooter costs around ₹0.50 per kilometre to maintain and ₹1.80 to fuel; a petrol hatchback costs around ₹1.50 to maintain and ₹7 to fuel. Maintenance is a smaller share of the bill than most owners think, but it is the share that varies most with how the vehicle is looked after, and it is where neglected two-wheelers and ageing cars quietly become expensive. Here are realistic intervals and bills for three common vehicles, and the items that surprise people.
Scooter (110 to 125 cc, 9,000 km a year)
| Item | Interval | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and basic service | 3,000 km or 3 months | ₹600 to ₹1,000 |
| Air filter | 6,000 to 9,000 km | ₹200 to ₹400 |
| Brake shoes / pads | 15,000 to 20,000 km | ₹400 to ₹800 per end |
| Drive belt and rollers (CVT) | 20,000 to 25,000 km | ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 |
| Spark plug | 10,000 km | ₹100 to ₹250 |
| Tyres (pair) | 20,000 to 25,000 km | ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 |
| Battery | 3 to 4 years | ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 |
Annual total, excluding tyres and battery: about ₹3,500 to ₹5,500. Per km, with everything amortised: roughly ₹0.50 to ₹0.70. Fuel at 45 km/L and ₹105: ₹2.30 per km. All-in running cost around ₹3 per km.
The item that catches scooter owners out is the CVT belt. It wears invisibly, then snaps, usually in traffic. Log the fitting date and replace at the interval.
Commuter motorcycle (100 to 150 cc, 10,000 km a year)
| Item | Interval | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and service | 3,000 to 5,000 km | ₹700 to ₹1,200 |
| Chain and sprockets | 20,000 to 30,000 km | ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 |
| Chain lube and adjustment | 500 to 800 km | ₹50 or your own time |
| Brake pads / shoes | 15,000 to 25,000 km | ₹400 to ₹900 per end |
| Clutch plates | 30,000 to 40,000 km | ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 |
| Tyres (pair) | 25,000 to 35,000 km | ₹3,000 to ₹5,500 |
Annual total: about ₹4,000 to ₹6,500, or ₹0.50 to ₹0.80 per km amortised. Fuel at 55 km/L: ₹1.90 per km. The neglected item here is the chain: a dry, slack chain eats sprockets and fuel economy together.
Petrol hatchback (1.0 to 1.2 litre, 12,000 km a year)
| Item | Interval | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled service | 10,000 km or 1 year | ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 |
| Air and cabin filters | 10,000 to 20,000 km | ₹500 to ₹1,200 |
| Brake pads (front) | 30,000 to 50,000 km | ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 |
| Battery | 3 to 4 years | ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 |
| Tyres (set of four) | 40,000 to 50,000 km | ₹16,000 to ₹28,000 |
| Air-conditioning service | 2 years | ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 |
| Clutch | 70,000 to 1,00,000 km | ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 |
| Suspension bushes, links | 60,000 km onward | ₹3,000 to ₹10,000 |
Annual total under 80,000 km: about ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 amortised, or ₹1 to ₹1.70 per km. Fuel at 15 km/L: ₹7 per km. After 80,000 km, add ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a year for the items that arrive together.
The items that catch car owners out are the ones that are fine for years and then land in the same quarter: tyres, battery and brakes often fall due within months of each other around year four.
The comparison that matters
| Scooter | Motorcycle | Hatchback | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance per km | ₹0.50 to ₹0.70 | ₹0.50 to ₹0.80 | ₹1 to ₹1.70 |
| Fuel per km | ₹2.30 | ₹1.90 | ₹7.00 |
| Running cost per km | about ₹3 | about ₹2.60 | about ₹8.50 |
Add depreciation, insurance and parking and the hatchback's all-in figure doubles; the two-wheelers' barely move. The full ownership breakdown does that arithmetic. For many city households the practical answer is one car for the family trips and a two-wheeler for the daily 6 km, and the logs will show exactly where the kilometres go.
Keeping maintenance cheap on any of them
- Service on time. Every interval above is cheaper than the failure it prevents.
- Tyre pressure every fortnight. It is free and it is the single biggest controllable factor in both tyre life and fuel economy.
- Log the wear items with dates and odometer readings: belt, chain, pads, tyres, battery. The reminder is what saves you, not the knowledge.
- Watch fuel economy. A falling number is the first sign of something that is about to cost money.
Questions
How much does scooter servicing cost per year in India?
Roughly ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 a year for a 110 to 125 cc scooter ridden 8,000 to 10,000 km, including oil changes, brake shoes, a belt or rollers when due, and consumables. Tyres add ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 every two to three years.
What is the maintenance cost per km of a hatchback in India?
About ₹1 to ₹2 per km for a petrol hatchback under eight years old, covering scheduled services, brakes, battery and tyres. It rises after 80,000 km as clutch, suspension and air-conditioning work arrives.
Is a scooter cheaper to run than a car?
Yes, by a wide margin: around ₹2 to ₹3 per km all-in for fuel and maintenance against ₹8 to ₹10 for a hatchback, before depreciation, insurance and parking.
